The constellation Canis Major (Great Dog)
22 Mar 1991 --- The constellation Canis Major (Great Dog). The main star seen here is Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Sirius is a white visual binary star having a white dwarf companion (not visible here). One of the nearest stars to Earth, Sirius is 8.6 light years away. Canis Major is seen in the southern hemisphere, lying partly in the Milky Way. The images of the stars in this constellation have been enhanced by a photographic technique. --- Image by © John R.
