Aries the Ram
11 Feb 1991 --- Aries the Ram. This constellation of the zodiac, visible in the night sky during the northern autumn, lies between Taurus and Pisces. Aries is not a particularly bright group; its importance lies in its location. About two thousand years ago the sun was in Aries as it passed from south to north of the celestial equator at the vernal, or spring, equinox. However, through a slight wobble of the Earth's axis called precession , the location of the vernal equinox no longer lies in Aries. This photograph was taken using a special filter which enhances the brighter stars. --- Image by © John R. Sanford/Science Photo Library/Corbis
