    19 Jul 1957, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands --- Original caption: Southwest Pacific: A rusting, jagged "memorial" of the Battle of Guadalcanal is this wreckage of the Japanese transport Kinugawa Maru. It was one of the four Japanese troop transports deliberately beached in November, 1942, in a desperate effort to get troops ashore after U. S. bombers had destroyed most of a Japanese convoy. The Kinugawa Maru and her sister ships are scheduled to be scrapped later in 1957. The scrap will probably go to Japan. --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
