Flock of Starlings Avoiding a Peregrine Falcon at Dusk
02 Feb 2009, Scottish Borders, Scotland, UK --- Hundreds of thousands of starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, form patterns in the sky as they move to avoid predators, a peregrine falcon at centre, near their night time roost. The starling is a familiar bird of both urban and rural areas. These huge wintering flocks of birds preparing to roost are often increased by birds from the continent and can reach numbers in their millions. Their favoured food is iinsects and seeds and in sunlight their plumage reveals its spectacular irridescence. --- Image by © Andrew Parkinson/Corbis
