Katabatic Winds Blowing Off Glacier in Brown Bluff
Original caption: Katabatic winds and orographic precipitation off of a glacier in Brown Bluff. Katabatic wind is cold and dense air that pours down the ice slope to the sea, becoming denser and picking up speed along the way. Katabatic winds can reach hurricane force. The winds in are so fierce that melting water coming off of the glacier is blown up hill against gravity. Orographic precipitation at sunrise formed when ocean moisture encounters high peaks super cooled by the glaciers. --- Image by © Seth Resnick/Science Faction/Corbis
