23 May 1991 --- False colour image of sulphric acid cloud formations over Venus, made in violet light by the Galileo Probe at a distance of 2.7 million km. The original monochrome image has been coloured blue to accentuate the cloud formations. The bright area seen is over the Venusian equator where the sun's light comes from directly overhead. Cloud banding is seen around the north and south poles (top and bottom of frame respectively). The Galileo probe made this image during a gravity- assist flyby on its way to its ultimate destination, Jupiter. It is expected to reach Jupiter in 1995, releasing a probe into the Jovian atmosphere before entering orbit. --- Image by © Science Photo Library/Corbis
